- Helsingin yliopiston assyriologian professorin Simo Parpolan jäätyä 30-vuotisen virkakauden jälkeen eläkkeelle 1.9.2009 assyriologian tulevaisuus tieteenalana Suomessa vaarantui vakavasti, koska yli sata vuotta yliopistossa edustettuna ollutta assyriologian oppituolia ei enää täytetty. Tämän johdosta Parpola päätti keväällä 2009 perustaa Suomessa tehtävää assyriologista tutkimusta tukevan säätiön.
