- Kustannusosakeyhtiö Otava perustettiin Eliel Aspelinin ja Hannes Gebhardin aloitteesta vuonna 1890. Tarkoituksena oli mm. suomenkielisen kansalliskirjallisuuden kohottaminen. Vuosina 1945–1991 Otava oli pörssiyhtiö. Vuosina 1991-2004 toteutettiin Otavan privatisointi ja yritysjärjestely. Vuosina 2000-2001 Otavan kustannustoiminta yhtiöitettiin Kustannusosakeyhtiö Otava Oy:ksi, ja konsernin emoyhtiön nimi muuttui Otava-Kuvalehdet Oy:ksi.
