- Ilmailukoulun edeltäjiä olivat Turun Lentokoulu (1918), Helsingin Santahaminassa sijainneet Lentopataljoona (1918-1819) ja Ilmailupataljoona (1919-1924). Kauhavalle Ilmailukoulu muutti vuonna 1929. Nimi muuttui Ilmasotakouluksi 1938, Lentosotakouluksi vuonna 1941, uudelleen Ilmasotakouluksi 1952 ja jälleen Lentosotakouluksi 2005. Ilmavoimien viestikoulun nimi muuttui samalla Ilmasotakouluksi.
